Antiochus

Antiŏchus, mehrere syr. Könige aus dem Geschlecht der Seleukiden. A. I., Sohn des Seleucus Nikator, 281-261 v. Chr., mit dem Beinamen Soter (Retter) wegen seines Sieges über die Gallier in Kleinasien. – Sein Sohn A. II., 261-247 v. Chr., Theos (Gott) von den Milesiern genannt, weil er sie vom Tyrannen Timarchus befreit, verlor Baktrien und Parthien, wurde von seiner Gemahlin Laodike vergiftet. – Dessen Enkel A. III., der Große, 222-187 v. Chr., stellte die schwankend gewordene seleukidische Herrschaft wieder her und gewann Phönizien und Palästina von den Ptolemäern zurück. Als er auch nach Europa hinübergriff, geriet er mit den Römern in Konflikt (Antiochischer Krieg), unterlag bei Magnesia 190 und mußte ganz Asien diesseit des Taurus abtreten. – Sein Sohn A. IV., Epiphănes, 175-164 v. Chr., veranlaßte durch seine Tyrannei den Aufstand der Makkabäer, welcher die Juden befreite. Ihm folgten noch mehrere Könige gleichen Namens, die Syrien 64 v. Chr., unter A. XIII., Asiatĭcus, röm. Provinz ward.
